Articles of Faith
The foundation of Islamic belief is based on these "Articles of Faith":
Belief in One God:
Only God is to be served and worshipped and the biggest sin in Islam is to associate partners with God.
Say, ‘He is God the One, God the eternal. He begot no one nor was He begotten. Nor is there to Him any equivalent." [Quran 112:1-4]
Belief in Angels:
God created angels from light to worship and obey Him.
Everyone in the heavens and earth belongs to Him, and those that are with Him are never too proud to worship Him, nor do they grow weary; they glorify Him tirelessly night and day. [Quran 21:19-20]
Belief in Prophets of God:
God communicates His guidance through human prophets sent to every nation. These prophets start with Adam and include Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, peace be upon them. The main message of all the prophets has always been that there is only One true God and He alone is worthy of being supplicated to and worshipped.
So [you believers], say, ‘We believe in God and in what was sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and all the prophets by their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we devote ourselves to Him.’ [Quran 2:136]
Belief in Revealed Books of God:
God revealed His wisdom and instructions through ‘books’; the four mentioned by name in the Quran are the Tawrat (Torah) revealed to Musa (Moses), the Zabur revealed to Dawud (David), the Injil (Gospel) revealed to Isa (Jesus), and the Quran revealed to Muhammad.
We have sent revelation to you [Prophet] as We did to Noah and the prophets after him, to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, to Jesus, Job, Jonah, Aaron, and Solomon- to David We gave the book [of Psalms] [Quran 4:163]
We sent Jesus, son of Mary, in their footsteps, to confirm the Torah that had been sent before him: We gave him the Gospel with guidance, light, and confirmation of the Torah already revealed- a guide and lesson for those who take heed of God. [Quran 5:46]
We sent to you [Muhammad] the Scripture with the truth, confirming the Scriptures that came before it, and with final authority over them: so judge between them according to what God has sent down. Do not follow their whims, which deviate from the truth that has come to you. We have assigned a law and a path to each of you. If God had so willed, He would have made you one community, but He wanted to test you through that which He has given you, so race to do good: you will all return to God and He will make clear to you the matters you differed about. [Quran 5:48]
Belief in Day of Judgment:
A day will come when all of creation will perish and resurrected in order to be judged for their deeds: The Day of Judgment. On this day, all will gather in the presence of God and each person will be judge individually, according to their life in the world and how they lived it. God will show mercy and fairness in judgment.
Whoever does good does it for his own soul and whoever does evil does it against his own soul: your Lord is never unjust to His creatures. [Quran 41:46]
He is God: there is no god but Him. He will gather you all together on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Whose word can be truer than God’s? [Quran 4:87]
Belief in Destiny and Divine Decree:
Islam asserts that God has full power and knowledge of all things, nothing happens except by His Will and with His full knowledge. This belief does not contradict the idea of free will. God does not force us, our choices are known to God beforehand because His knowledge is complete. This recognition helps the believer through difficulties and hardships.
God does not burden any soul with more than it can bear: each gains whatever good it has done, and suffers its bad. [Quran 2:286]
No misfortune can happen, either in the earth or in yourselves, that was not set down in writing before We brought it into being- that is easy for God so you need not grieve for what you miss or gloat over what you gain. [Quran 57:22-23]
